IMPORTANT TRYOUT INFORMATION FOR POTENTIAL GOLFERS – 2025 SEASON
Who Can Try Out?
Any male student at Oviedo High School in grades 9 through 12.
When & Where Are Tryouts?
Tryouts for the 2025 season begin on August 4 at Twin Rivers Golf Course. Players must be ready to tee off at 3:00 PM SHARP! Given Florida’s unpredictable weather, be at the course rain or shine.
Tryout Schedule:
📅 8/4 – 3:00 PM @ Twin Rivers
📅 8/5 – 3:00 PM @ Twin Rivers
📅 8/6 – 3:00 PM @ Tee-It-Up
📅 8/7 – 3:00 PM @ Twin Rivers
What Do I Need to Bring?
✔ Personal golf equipment – Clubs, bag, balls, shoes, tees, gloves, etc.
✔ Proper golf attire – Collared shirt, golf shorts, and golf shoes (a hat is recommended for sun protection).
✔ Competitive mindset – Be prepared to play at a high level.
Eligibility Requirements
📌 All eligibility paperwork must be completed online through the Athletic Office before participating in any team activities, including tryouts.
📌 Check your status frequently until you receive official clearance.
📌 For assistance, contact the Athletic Office.
📌 You MUST be cleared by the first day of tryouts.
Team Size & Selection Process
Due to course and practice space limitations, the team will be limited to 8-10 golfers. The final roster will be determined based on skill level, competition readiness, and overall ability to contribute at a high level.
Can Beginners Try Out?
Beginners are welcome, but this is a varsity-level team. If you’re new to golf, consider using the time before tryouts to improve by:
✔ Joining a junior PGA program for structured training.
✔ Taking private or group lessons to refine technique.
✔ Competing in tournaments (e.g., U.S. Kids Golf) to gain experience under match pressure.
What Score Do I Need to Make the Team?
Team selection is based on competition with returning players. For a strong chance of making the team:
🏌️ Breaking 90 for 18 holes (or 45 for 9 holes) is typically the minimum.
🏌️ To earn a match spot, players generally need to shoot under 40 for 9 holes.
🏌️ Our courses range from 6,300 to 6,800 yards, so practice from similar distances.
Does It Cost Anything to Play?
Oviedo High School sports teams do not have player fees. However, players are responsible for providing their own golf equipment (clubs, shoes, balls, etc.).
Additional Considerations
☀ Prepare for the heat – The golf season takes place during Florida’s hottest months. Practice playing and walking in summer conditions.
⛳ Walking is required – Players must carry their own clubs or use pull carts during matches. Get comfortable walking the course without a golf cart.
What Should I Do Before Tryouts?
Set a goal for yourself:
🔹 Making the team (a starting point, but aim higher).
🔹 Earning a spot in matches (requires dedication and consistent improvement).
🔹 Playing golf beyond high school (demands the highest level of commitment).
Your goal will determine how much effort you need to put into preparing before tryouts.
Class Schedule Considerations
Balancing academics and athletics is key. Consider:
✔ Taking some virtual classes to allow for more practice time.
✔ Adjusting your schedule to manage practice and match commitments effectively.
✔ Most team members take 7th period virtually, with some also opting for 1st period virtual to allow for more morning recovery time.
